What Is General Dentistry?
General dentistry is a health service meant to maintain your teeth so it does not decay or deteriorate to the point of having to have major procedures done. A dentist who practices general dentistry is like your family doctor. He or she is familiar with almost all aspects of your teeth’s health, but he is not qualified to treat everything. For instance, for major procedures like dental surgery, you will need to go to a dental surgeon. For braces, the dentist trained to administer this is called an orthodontist. However, some of the major procedures can be prevented with regular visits to your dentist.
This does not mean you can belittle general dentistry because they have the same training as specialists except they did not go further to study any particular field. In other words, dental surgeons and other dentists specializing in specific areas all graduate in general dentistry first before moving to their target area.
To be more specific about general dentistry, you can go to the dentist for the following procedures:
Prophylaxis – Commonly known as cleaning, you should visit the dentist at least once a year for this procedure. The dentist will give a professional tooth and gum cleaning, paying particular attention to those hard-to-reach areas because these are the places where tooth decay starts. Your dentist will also give advice on what you’re missing or overlooking when you brush your teeth, and how to keep it in good order until the next visit. Avoid going to the clinic right after eating and without brushing properly because then the procedures takes much longer, and your dentist might not do such a good job if he’s rushing.
Fillings – Any decay should be cleaned and filled with your choice of filling. Without the filling, you will lose the affected tooth. The different materials you can choose for your filling are amalgam which is the most common, porcelain if the top layer is affected, composite resin, gold, and mercury. This last is rarely used since it has been under a lot scrutiny for being harmful to your overall health.
Extractions- Decayed teeth beyond repair must be removed because there is the potential risk of infection.
Caps or Crowns - When a permanent tooth get traumatized, there is not much that can be done to restore the tooth if the damage is severe. For minor trauma, you can cap the tooth. For minor trauma, you can cap the tooth. For minor trauma, you can “cap” the tooth to prevent it from more damage.
Dentures – Permanent teeth that cannot be capped will have to be replaced by dentures. A dentist does not do the dentures himself; rather he will measure you with a mould, and send it out.
Bridge – This is like an artificial tooth to fill a gap. It’s a common procedure that does not require any surgery or weeks of treatment, your dentist can do this procedure in his clinic.
There are general dentists that go beyond these treatments by training for implants, root canals, and cosmetic dentistry. Although, expect to pay a lot more for their services including the minor treatments. This is a distinct group of dentists that compose the cream of the crop for general dentistry.ist for thosa variety of restorative services and may choose to refer
